There
are five skill levels for open canoeing. These are official courses,
certified by the Irish Canoe Union and run by qualified instructors.
Level 1 Canoe Proficiency test
Basic introduction to kayaking, including some basic strokes and capsize drill.
Level 2 Canoe Proficiency
All the basic strokes and rescues you need to paddle safely and competently on flat water, as part of a group.
Level 3 Canoe Proficiency
Intermediate
skill level, covering the strokes, rescues and group awareness skills
you need to paddle on rivers up to Grade 2. This is an excellent level
to aim for, even if you are only a flat water paddler.
Level 4 Canoe Proficiency
Advanced
skill level, covering the strokes, techniques, rescues and group
awareness skills you need to paddle on rivers up to Grade 2+ and
undertake trips across large, open lakes.
Level 5 Canoe Proficiency
Highly
advanced white water skills and ability to undertake rescues in extreme
conditions. Knowledge of the different aspects of canoeing, such as
expeditioning, poling and sailing.
