River Grades

Rivers are graded in terms of difficulty. There are six grades of difficulty. River Grades can change depending on water levels.

Grade 1
Flat Water Calm, sheltered water; such as a lake, harbour or very gently flowing river with no obstructions.

Grade 2
Moderate Rivers, with small rapids and easy obstructions. Clear, straightforward routes. Some skills are needed.

Grade 3
Difficult Fast flowing water. Route is clear. Large rapids and obstructions. Good skills needed.

Grade 4
Very Difficult Fast flowing water. Continuous rapids with few eddies. Route is not always clear. Very good kayak and rescue skills needed.

Grade 5
Extremely Difficult Very complex rapids. Serious difficulties and dangers. Inspection and rescue cover often essential.

Grade 6
Extreme Not often attempted. Extremely difficult and dangerous. Consequences may be life threatening and rescue will be difficult or impossible.
