Cleaning A Rabbit, For An Upcoming Survival Skills Course
This may be upsetting for some; but for anyone interested in bushcraft – this is a great skill to have. Simpler than you may think, with a bit of care and a sharp knife.
Came across this freshly knocked down rabbit yesterday. We’ll use it on the next upcoming Survival Skills Course happening in May.
It would have been easier to skin it before cleaning it; but the students will be doing the skinning, dressing and cooking of it on their course, so my priority was to simply clean it and put it into a freezer for the next couple weeks.
1. I generally find it easier to hang a creature, with the legs stretched taughtly apart.
2. One vertical incision to slice through the skin.
3. A second vertical incision to slice through the flesh, being very careful not to pierce the internal organs.
4. The internal organs pull out with your hand as one complete pudding. Check inside and do a bit of cleaning out.
5. The head comes off easy with some gentle knife work.
6. A really good wash and sluice through, then into a freezer.
